Writing novels

Is it really possible to write the great American

Novel any more?

With publishing so open and easily accessible you might wonder just what the attraction actually is. Writing is a process of developing many things, here are a list of just a few, the characters, the plot, the story line, visual language and dialog. A novel is more than just a short story it is the essence of the writers life force condensed into the pages of a book. During a recent telephone conversation, I mentioned having sent off the last revisions for my twentieth novel, “Great Sky Woman.” There was a silence on the other side of the phone, followed by the question “How in the world do you do that? Twenty novels!” Really how is that even possible?

The truth is that I know many writers who have written far more than twenty novels. It is not that unusual. In fact, if you are a working writer, the “perfect” output is very close to a book a year. Less often than this, and the readers stop anticipating your next book, and wander to another writer’s literary pasture. There is a commonality to the behavior patterns of successful writers, and a commonality to the behavior patterns of writers who just can’t get started, can’t get finished, or stall out at their first or third book. Successful, prolific writers: 1) Write every day. That’s EVERY day, even if you do not have as much time as you want, keep on writing. They sit down, open their veins, and bleed into their computers. Yes, it can be painful, but if you don’t maintain this kind of regularity, rust creeps in. The connection between heart, mind and fingers is broken. And we mistake the struggle for our natural state. 2) Read every day. Reading is priming the pump. It is modeling successful behavior. It is increasing vocabulary, studying plot and characterization, and entertaining the little subconscious demons and angels who actually do the deep work. Never neglect this. 3) Set deadlines and quotas. There is a certain amount of work to be done, on a daily basis. It need not be some huge amount—a page a day will create a book a year! 4) Create a writing space, a place that feels comfortable to them. This is both a physical space (a desk) and a psychological space (created with music, posters, familiar objects, etc.) It may also be a temporal space—a specific time of day or night that they write. 5) Have specific goals. They have committed to being professional writers. This is how they define themselves, and they never forget it. If you accept this definition, then you MUST behave as a professional writer, on a daily basis, or it causes emotional discomfort. They are willing to accept this friendly prod. 6) Don’t listen to the negative voices in their heads. Everyone has them. The voices tell you you can’t, you mustn’t, it isn’t good enough. You must find a way to tell the voices to shut up, to ignore them, or to quiet them. Any flow-based activity will help here: meditation, Tai Chi, yoga, running, Sufi breathing exercises, martial arts…the list is endless. Find one. 7) Are committed to the long-term. They know that if they spend an hour or three a day, every day, for a decade, they will build their career. 8) Expose themselves to criticism and rejection. In other words, they FINISH their projects, and then SUBMIT those finished projects to editors and agents. 9) Involve other people in their “master mind” group. Successful writers know other writers. And readers. And editors. And agents. They befriend them, recruit them, get feedback from them, and listen to the feedback. This is their “brain trust.” Unsuccessful writers hide in their offices, never finish their work, never send it out to risk rejection. 10) Have W.I.T.—they will do Whatever It Takes to ethically reach their dreams, to become the best they can be. They never quit. They know that success is based less on talent or “who you know” than persistence, hard work, and honesty. There are more distinctions, but I’m out of time—got to start working on book twenty-one!

Article marketing

What do you think about Article marketing is it real or is it just a farce?

So is article marketing as it once was in the old days when it worked, dead and gone now?

In a recent blog post, one of the editors over at EZA was pontificating about how we need to do a better job of generating content but I have to wonder what they might be smoking over there simply because without writers, I am fairly certain that EZA would not be in business for long, but they have these, so called editors, that seem to have this better than thou attitude.

One blog commenter, made the statement that the diamond upgrade was paid, the blog mistress made a point of saying that it was earned, not paid for, but in reality, if you put the time into developing the kind of content that the diamond status requires, is that no worth money?

If you found a client and put that much time and effort into generating content for them would you not be getting paid, and I mean way more than the symbolic status of diamond, you know what EZA is a joke.

So my question to EZA, is simply Why bother with publishers that don’t really know much about publishing, when you look at some of these examples you have to wonder, about where they went to school.   Ezine articles may have just shot themselves in the foot by playing God with submissions.

Why bother with maniacal issues getting approved by the new and so called improved EZA because you could make more money and get more traffic by publishing it on your own website instead of dealing with jerks that do not even know how to spell.

So why bother with Ezine Articles when you can publish it on your own website.

In a recent very controversial, decision (at least to some online) Google decided to change up the way they were distributing the search results on their website, which is not unusual, however, for a change in policy it appears that original content is something that google and more importantly google consumers are looking for, some of these websites will not be missed and still others may need to make adjustments.

The main concern seems to be in relation to the quality of the content and how that content is presented to the consumer.

For the most part publishing has been a fairly straight forward process, you type it up and edit it then you publish it, that process is changing and over time it will continue to change. Article marketing is a changing process, what used to be considered good content is now considered, well not so good, when you look at what we view as content then you have to begin to understand that in time everything changes, from how we speak to how language is used in publications.

Writing Every Day For Beginners

Managing your writing…

How often do you write?

Once a month?   Once in a long while, Twice a year?

There are probably more people who want to become writers than there
are people who are already writers.

If you are reading this you may be one of them.
If you want to start publishing your own content or just get started then your in the right place.

This article is for the beginners and it includes both people who have already started writing a little bit and people who are having trouble getting off the fence and getting going. One of the biggest problems problems writers have in getting started is worrying abut being perfect. Often times they can’t seem to get started because they’re worried about doing something wrong. Writing, however, is a skill that requires lots of practice in order for you to really find your unique style. But you can still have fun and let readers enjoy your writing even if you’re not perfect.

So coming up with a reason and a way to get lots of practice is very important and in fact it’s critical to developing your own free flowing writers voice. Starting your own blog is a great way to get practice. Blogs are easy to start and easy to manage. There a lots of free blogging platforms that still, even though they are free, can be made to look very nice. Another valuable feature of blog, for a writer especially, is that the contents (i.e. the posts, articles, stories, etc.) can be categorized. That means that over a period of time your blog can become a valuable informational resource for a variety of subjects. Blogs are very portable and very accessible too. You can blog from anywhere.

Internet service is available even in many public places today so your ‘office’ can be a room in your home, a picnic table at a par, or a gourmet coffee shop in a ritzy mall. And of course you can write ‘off line’ and publish later. You don’t have to have access to the net to do the writing. You can simply capture those good ideas you get in a text file and later upload that file onto your blog. You’ll find that as you try to become more aware of what you’re thinking during the day you’ll have more ideas to write about than you can possibly ever handle. No matter where you are, if you get a sudden thought or idea or inspiration for something to write about….you can do it.

You can either get it online right away or at least capture the idea on some kind of text file and upload it later. Blogs are great for aspiring writers also because of the ease of editing something you’ve written. It frequently happens that after you finish writing a piece, you have an idea for a different way of saying it. With an article on a blog, going back and making the change is quick and easy. But never forget that the important thing about writing is not that your grammar and spelling is perfect (although they are important) but rather that you’re able to ‘make your point’. In other words, if you can express yourself verbally, then your real challenge be able to type well enough to get your ideas from your brain, through your fingers, to your keyboard, and from there onto your blog and from there of course…..

into the blogosphere.

Yes, typing skills are a big part of it. It’s a known fact that your brain thinks a lot faster than you can talk. So if you have to spend too much mental energy focusing on keeping your fingers under control (on the keyboard), and thinking about spelling, and formatting…..then you’re probably going to have a hard time ‘finishing a thought’. So…..writers! Set up a blog and write every day….even twice a day would be better. Start with short articles, posts, observations and comments about whatever is on your mind at the time. There’s plenty of news out there to talk about. I’ll guarantee you that if you write consistently and enthusiastically and talk about something that you really do have an opinion about, then you’ll see your writing style get smoother and more natural very quickly. If you’ll just get started, and don’t stop, and keep on keeping on……you’ll start to get compliments about your writing style. Why is that? It’s because people don’t write anymore. Most people are information consumers and not information producers. Even if you’re just writing your opinions you’re still a ‘producer’ and you can take pride in that fact.

People don’t care how much you know (i.e. about grammar) as much as they care about what you think about your subject. Grammar is not exciting. Ideas are. Keep you eye on the technical details of grammar and spelling but don’t let worrying about them keep you from writing, writing and writing some more. You can ‘do’ and ‘learn’ at the same time. Start a blog….start writing…and , above all, relax and have fun!

Keyword Copy

When you think about using keywords what is the first thing that comes to mind, software, trends, research.

How do you use keywords in the content at your website?

Writing and developing content is often a difficult process.

Copy is often referred to as the life blood of the Marketing world, knowing what to say and when to say it is just one small part of what copy is.

Making money online is often all about the words you use to communicate to your customers.

Of the many opinions on how to write good website copy, you may find more than one opinion about how effective the use of keywords are. SEO  the great Search Engine Optimization, people pay huge amounts of money every year and still cannot get what they want…

Keywords are what can help you develop great SEO content.

The key to writing persuasive keyword copy is to find that happy medium between pleasing the search engines and pleasing your readers. There are some basic rules of thumb that you can stick to as you attempt to accomplish this goal. In fact writing search engine and people friendly copy is as easy as chatting to a good friend.

First of all don’t cram your copy with keywords. Only use about three different keywords or keyword phrases per page. Keyword phrases are more effective than single words as people tend to type phrases, not single words into search engine boxes. Don’t write less than 250 words in any one section of your website. It is possible for a search engine optimized article to be too short. Although when it comes to copy for search engine optimization it is important to be as concise and to the point as possible. Try to write in grade six level conversational language.

Don’t try to impress search engines or readers with your lofty knowledge of rare vocabulary. If you are writing these yourself, then try writing the way you talk and then incorporating the keywords into the copy after you have chatted to your readers on paper. You know you are writing good SEO copy if no sentence looks like it was constructed to especially accommodate the keyword. You can tell these types of sentences because nobody can understand them. Even if the search engine spiders find them friendly, difficult to read content is only going to have your visitor moving on to another site (possibly your competitor’s) after they decide that your writing doesn’t make any sense at all. Writing in a natural but informed tone that is not too structured or crammed with keywords is the best approach to creating excellent SEO copy.

PLR content gold

Creating gold from dust?

Is it possible at all?

Is it alchemy?

Is there a magic button

to push where I don’t have to do anything at all?

What if in the near future you need a method of safe content distribution that basically proves you have the rights to publish that material. What if what you think is PLR turns out to be plagiarized from someone else’s hard work.

Why is this so important? PLR content may become more valuable over time, in fact with the S978 so called youtube streaming video bill, (AKA) the ten strikes bill, would make it a felony to view upload and or other wise consume content that someone (anyone really) claims is their copyrighted content. Which means, that the common practice of taking photos, online, using music in videos, using photos in videos, using video clips, that are online on youtube.com in mass quantity. Literally over night about half or better of the millions of videos on youtube would have to be taken down and removed. While they may loose this battle, (at least I hope they do) they will eventually pass a bill that criminalizes youtube videos. That means that you will need to have royalty free content, in your possession and you will need to have proof that the content is royalty free. There are thousands and thousands of PLR photos out there, millions of music clips, being sold and some of those sellers are not even the owners of the music clips. Millions of photos, in millions of templates, that are being sold as PLR where the actual authors of the art work were never compensated and never agreed to sell their work in the first place. What if your buying products that are not being legally sold? That could be a real problem, something to really seriously consider. Learn more about legal issues that could soon be effecting you if your marketing online. It could literally make a difference in your business and potentially your freedom…

Creative content

Content used to be the king of the Internet.

Then the web was re-invented, and social networking was discovered, along with technology that produces a level playing field in the online industry where in the past only the rich or the corporate budgets could afford to create a website, now just about anyone with $20 bucks to get started can have a website up and running in less than three days.

Content became more important, the more content you had the better off you were in the search engines, that did not last however and so soon just content was not enough.

For a long time, Google was the king of the search engines, and for the most part they were however things changed, and the new kid on the block showed up and made a big mess in the sandbox and for the most part the new kid was ignored and laughed at by the masses. They even made jokes about this new impertinent, kid who dared to challenge the great and mighty Google and for a while it seemed as if the new kid was not going to ever get any real traction in the market place. Googles big mistake. Google made a huge error in judgement, they thought that they were bigger and better than anyone, and no one could ever challenge them, but they were wrong. They were wrong because they thought that they were too big to be challenged. Google failed to adapt to the changing market place, they failed to understand that they were in a bad position and did not even know it, because they had forgotten where they came from. Google forgot, that large corporate advertisers are of little use if you do not have buyers and consumers to offer up to those advertisers, google forget that very real fact and because of that the new kid on the block, got a food hold in the market, that new, kid was of course bing and through some very good advertising as well as a good service model that reflected the consumer first and the advertiser second. Then Google fought back and made some changes, but they again failed to understand that advertisers must come second and the consumers and website searchers much come first. People are literally sick and tired of all the advertising with little or no real content to back that up. Google made some changes, but a lot of those changes were just skin deep the same old thing was at work in the background, so they tried to find a more literal approach to providing search information to consumers, if google does not make some changes soon they will once again find that they made a big mistake. Creative content is actually the new king, advertising is something that we will always have, but with all the competition, all the many thousands of websites online today, people do have a choice. That choice is becoming more and more “value oriented content” You would be wise to consider how this coming change might effect your website and its content. That might be the most important thing you do this year…

writing content

Creative processing, thinking, learning, all these things play a part in the process of generating unique and valid content.

Think about the story, what you want to relate to the reader.

Telling a story

The basics of the story…

When you think about writing your really just telling a story but that is not the main reason you want to write, take the following story for instance its not really a great story its not really even grammatically correct, but sometimes its the story that matters not what form its in after all some cars look great, and some look like junk but they both get you to where you want to go, sure everyone wants to ride in a limo, but most of us are just as happy in a small car.

There used to be an old man who fished at the same spot every day, he never caught anything, but he returned every day to the same place, and he prepared his fishing gear to the day. Every day the locals would watch him as he fished but never caught a thing. A few began to wonder if the old man had finally lost it, because he never really accomplished his goal of catching fish, they whispered about him behind his back and he knew it but ignored them. Each day as the sun shown that beautiful bright orange, the old man would come, and fish by now everyone wondered what he was up to and why he would spend so much time doing something that obviously was a waste of time.

Finally the locals got together and decided to do a intervention because the old man was obviously a little off, he was doing something that was a waste of his time and if he had Alzheimer’s perhaps he needed help. They all got together, and waited for him to come to his fishing post, after a few minutes they began to fidget, they began to talk and whisper, the old man was late.   As they were all beginning to think the same thing, a little boy appeared at the far end of the dock and all the people stood there wondering what was going on, as the boy came closer, it was obvious that he was wearing the hat that the old may had worn he was carrying the same bucket, and fishing pole too.

The whispering began to build up as the locals began to consider what was going on. . .

The boy approached the group and moved to the exact same spot on the dock, as the old may had fished for so long, as he began to setup his fishing gear, the locals asked what he was doing, as the boy answered the people were silent with anticipation.

The boy grinned and asked a question in return, are all you people here to fish too?

They replied, no, we were just wondering about the old man, do you know him? Sure, said the boy, that’s my gramps, he had to go to the doctor today, so I am taking his place.   The people began to wonder even more what was going on and so they asked the boy the question they all had been wondering about. We have watched your grandfather over the last few months come and fish here every day and we were beginning to wonder about him if he was ok you know. The boy smiled and said, oh, I see, he did not say anything else but he just continued to ready his fishing pole to begin to fish.

The people began to wonder even more what was going on here, so they asked another question, they said why does he come here to fish, because he never catches anything at all, so were just wondering what the difference, what does he bother to fish here, there are not fish, and he has never caught anything at all. The boy smiled, and said, that’s an easy question, the difference is that last year when my Grandma went to heaven he promised that he would not change his life after she was gone, so every day he comes here to honor her memory. You see he really loved her and so do I, so today the difference is I am standing in for my Gramps so he can go to the doctor.

The people all looked at their shoes embarrassed at what they had been thinking, they watched as the boy readied his fishing pole then they realized that there was no bait on the fishing hook, as the boy lowered the hook into the water, they noticed a book that was in the bucket, the boy pulled the book out it was a book of poetry, the boy began to read the book. As the people, began to move away, humbled they realized that the difference in what the old man had been doing was that he was honoring a memory it was important for him to do this because he knew that his grandson was watching him and he knew that he was teaching an important lesson quality matters, the difference is that when you do something you should do it to the best of your ability.

writing resources

Developing content is all about one thing, Research.

One of the things that you may not think about at first before you start to begin to write, is how you can develop the kind of content that you really need in order to attract traffic to your website. When you write it is from a standpoint of knowledge, once you have knowledge to share the writing of it usually is not that difficult. Gaining that knowledge, is the hardest part of writing and it is often the most over looked aspect of learning to write. Research is the most important part of writing.

Without knowledge there is no reason to write, as you may have seen in some corners of the internet, (usually dark and fetid) writing without knowledge is not a pretty thing, it is usually an insulting thing, but that is for another day. Lets take a few minutes to have a look at how you can produce great content by using the resources you have at hand, namely research. There are literally hundreds of places online where you can do research, however, one word of warning… Just because you read it on a website does not make it true, or accurate, in fact, about 78 percent of many websites contain information that is either not accurate or is just plain wrong.

Take the average Wikipedia page, much of what you see (allegedly) is full of opinion and what goes on behind the scenes is often reminiscent, of a fight on a play ground. As with a few recent stories that were incorrectly published on a blog, and a certain network went with the story only to find out later that opps, the story was just that fiction, but too late this certain network had already published that (made up) (allegedly) story as fact, they had to then apologize and fire a few people, sort of dumb when you think about it. But back to incorrect, science, do not just take the first view, look for a dissenting viewpoint, find the truth, and when you do that you will have completed the first part of what it means to be a writer.

Finding good writing resources, may be easier said than done, for example you may think that just using google will produce the best result, however, that may not always be true, in fact you should be using at least three search engines. Yahoo, Bing, and other search engines are also good choices, taking the most common website is not the best way to get good research.

Reading and learning is only part of the job you have as a researcher.

Getting that unique knowledge and then comparing what you have read with what you know to be the truth is the second part of your job as a writer, it is a part of writing that many writers have either forgotten, or intentionally chose to distort the truth, in years past this was known as yellow journalism.

These days, for every good writer there are many bad writers, they get what they deserve with fewer readers and less results, so if you want to be a better writer, then you need to carefully consider the topic and its implications. Creating good content that reflects the knowledge of the prevailing social conscious is just one method, there are more and while it may seem like the easiest thing to do is to go along with the crowd the true path to knowledge is not always as clear or as wide as you may have been led to believe.

Developing good researching skills is just part of what you need to do to generate the best form of content. Most of all know your subject, know the history of your subject, know the origin of your subject. When you have knowledge in researching you have a solid foundation in which to write.
